EUROPEAN HEALTH INSURANCE CARD

The European Health Insurance Card is an arrangement that provides access to medical treatment when travelling in Europe.  Presentation of the Card within EC countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway will provide the holder with emergency medical care at little or no charge, and in Switzerland at reduced cost.  However, few countries will pay the full cost of medical treatment, healthcare services can vary between countries and private clinics will not usually accept the card – treatment must be obtained from a public sector hospital.

The European Health Insurance Card cannot be regarded as a substitute for a comprehensive insurance policy.  It does not provide cover for other insurance categories such as loss of money and luggage, or benefit payments in case of accidents.

TRAVEL INSURANCE

Each tour leader should consider the travel insurance requirements of their group.  Many of the sports associations offer playing insurance, but often the cover is limited to loss of life, limb, hearing or sight.  Should a limb be broken, or other injury sustained, the player is not covered.  Should this mean a visit, or even a stay in hospital, you as the tour leader need to know that insurance is in place to cover the hospital fees.  Should someone need to stay behind with the injured player after the remainder of the group have returned to the UK, or, should the injured person need an air ambulance to return him to the UK, again you need to know that insurance cover is in place.

Again, sports associations playing insurance doesn’t include the normal travel insurance cover for things such as Cancellation, Personal Possessions, Missed Departure, Personal Liability or Legal Fees
